Republic Day is India's greatest national holiday .It is celebrated every year on January 26, in New Delhi and in capitals of the States, as well as at other headquarters and important places with pomp and pageant. Each year, on January 26, every Indian’s heart fills up with patriotic fervor and immense love for motherland. India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, spanning a period of more than 4000 years, and witnessing the fusion of innumerable customs and traditions, which reflects the rich culture and heritage of the country. This day is celebrated with much zeal and pride all across the nation.
The history of the Republic Day traces back to the time when Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress took place at midnight of December 31, 1929 - January 1, 1930, and the Indian Tri-Color flag was unfurled and a pledge was taken that every year on January 26, "Republic Day" would be observed and that the people would unceasingly strive for the establishment of a Sovereign Democratic Republic of India.
Today, Republic Day is celebrated all over India and specially in New Delhi in a grand way with thousands of spectators and all important dignitaries around Rajpath. The President presides over the function. The occasion begins with a solemn reminder about the devotion, courage, skill, vigilance and determination shown by the martyrs who embraced death like a hero and brought glory to our motherland. The President of India, who apparently is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, takes the salute. It is then followed by the unfurling of the National flag and the National Anthem is played. This marks the beginning of the colorful parade with soldiers marching , followed by folk dances of different states and students from different schools .
Millions of our forefathers who fought for India's freedom - many whose names no one remembers, millions of those heroes who gave their lives passionately to protect the soil we stand on today. It’s because of these heroes that India sees a new dawn, an era of prosperity.
