Memorial Day is a day in remembrance of the many soldiers who died while serving their country. Formerly known as Decoration Day this day is a holiday in United States to honor the service and dedication of all those who died while in military service. After the Civil War ended May 30 was first observed as the Decoration Day to decorate the graves of the martyrs with flowers, today Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May. A standard moment of remembrance for great men of the country is observed in the US at 3 p.m. in the afternoon. People visit cemeteries and memorials to this. The tradition of buying ‘buddy poppies’ has also been associated with this day; where people buy poppies flower or artificial poppies to collect donation for the families of those who served the country and are in need to the day.
Memorial Day is not just a three day weekend holiday, it is lot more than the celebration, speeches and parades. There have been a lot of controversies about the origination of the day but what is important is to remember the great thought and the purpose behind the observance of the day and not where it originated from.
